In the first month of the Islamic calendar, Muharram means “forbidden” or “sacred” in Arabic. Fighting was forbidden in Muharram before Islam to ensure the safety of pilgrims making the Hajj from Mecca. The Quran cites “Four Sacred Months” in particular while discussing months. One of these four holy months, listed in the Bible is Muharram. Undoubtedly, twelve months in the Islamic calendar are recorded in the Book of Allah from the day He created the Earth and the sky, in which four sacred moths are considered. Because of its holiness, Muharram is therefore an ideal time for spiritualism, exploration, and restoration.

The sorrowful day of Imam Hussain ibn Ali’s sacrifice in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD—the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad is considered one of the most important parts of Muharram.

Shia Muslims celebrate this day, identified as Ashura, on the tenth day of Muharram, to be a day of grief, in which they commemorate the killings of Imam Hussain and his companions, who stood up for justice and truth against the corrupt Umayyad ruler Yazid. By participating in a variety of ceremonies to show the sorrow of Imam Hussain’s death.

What is Muharram word?

Muharram word is derived from the Arabic term “Al-Muharram”, which means restricted or disallowed, and one of the four holy months of the year. It means that this month is off-limits to fighting. Before Islam, according to certain researchers, the month was known as “Safer al-Awwal.”

Muharram also referred to as Muharram-ul-Haram is the first lunar month of the Hijri calendar (consisting of 12 months), and signifies the start of the Islamic year. The word “Muharram” refers to “unlawful,” meaning that particular decisions become restricted during it because they would go against its holy status. The only month in the year to which Allah’s name has been attached; and the Prophet Muhammad (saw) called it “the Sacred Month of Allah,”.

The names of Allah’s House (Al-Masjid Al-Haram) and the Muharram month are made from the Arabic’s basic word; both are holy places where every action “good or bad” has importance.

Four holy months:

Rajab, Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram are the four holy months designated by Allah.

The historical significance of Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram meant that pilgrims may complete the Hajj in safety, free from the threat of robbery or conflict. Fighting was not permitted in Dhul-Qa’dah, during the conduct of hajj. Dhul-Hijjah, the day they performed the Hajj in Makkah and its environs, or Muharram, the day they returned home after completing the Hajj. In pre-Islamic times, the Arabs followed this ideal, and Allah affirmed it in the Qur’an.

In the Hijri calendar, Rajab is the seventh month and is considered a sacred month. Traditionally, to let anyone who wished to do the Umrah in Rajab.

lunar calendar in Islam

The Islamic calendar sometimes referred to as the lunar or Hijri calendar, is used by Muslims worldwide to calculate the times for sacred events. The Hijri calendar is based on the twelve lunar months; in which a new month starts upon the sighting of a new moon.

Twelve lunar months corresponded to Islam

Muḥarram, Ṣafar, Rabīʿ al-Awwal, Rabīʿ al-Thānī, Jumādā al-Awwal, Jumādā al-Thānī, Rajab, Shaʿbān, Ramaḍān (the month of fasting), Shawwāl, Dhū al-Qaʿdah, and Dhū al-Ḥijjah serve as its basis. About the time of the new moon, each month officially starts.

Ashura Day, the 10th Muharram

Asura Day, the 10th of Muharram is one of the holiest days of the Islamic year the 10th of Muharram, which is also known as the Day of Ashura. This date marks the anniversary of Imam Hussain’s (AS) sacrifice during the Karbala War.

Acts that Took Place on Ashura Day

Many other events occurred on that day of Ashura some of these:

The Observed reason for the month of Muharram

The observed reason for the month of Muharram is that the month of Muharram holds great spiritual and historical value. The first month of the Islamic calendar, which corresponds with the Muslims’ hijrah (emigration) to Medina and the founding of the first Islamic state in 622 CE, is also a month that Allah (SWT) has designated as sacred.

The Islamic calendar has twelve months, although our knowledge of certain of them is often greater than that of others. Everyone is aware that Ramadan is a time for fasting, and many are also aware of Dhul Hijjah’s devotion. But Muharram appears to be quite widely recognized. Hadith refers to this holy month as the month of Allah (SWT); no other month has this distinction.

What occurred in Muharram?

Muharram is a month of remembering for the Muslim Ummah, even though Muslims utilize the occasion to commemorate the start of the new Islamic Year and consider it as an additional chance to become closer to Allah.

The decisive battle of Karbala occurred on the 10th of Muharram, also known as the Day of Ashura, in the 61st year of the Islamic Calendar. This battle took place between Yazid’s army, the Ummayad Caliph, who had a far bigger force, and the tiny army of the Prophet’s (PBUH) family and allies.

Along with most of the male members of the Prophet’s (PBUH) family, Imam Hussain (AS), the adored grandson of the Prophet, was cruelly killed.

Significance of Muharram and Safar

For Muslims, the Hijri year, which begins in the month of Muharram, is critical.

Muharram and Safar are an annual occasion to remember al-Husayn ibn {Ali (A), the third Imam of Shiite Muslims and the grandson of the Prophet (S.A), who suffered death at Karbala’ on the tenth of Muharram in the year 61. Both the Shi`ah and the Ahl al-Sunnah commemorate this event’s sorrow, as well as the martyrs’ struggle and dedication, with great passion along with the Shiya community.

There are a few special Sunnah in this holy month, such as fasting and doing other prayer time in Sydney

The dual perspectives of Sunni and Shia observance

Let’s delve into the virtues and things to do in this blessed month from dual perspectives of Sunni and Shia observance.

That the fervor and passion created by the victims of Karbala are unparalleled in the traditions of faith would be considered to be overstated. In humanity’s history, nobody else has cultivated such enduring love and respect among their adherents as the martyrs of Karbala, especially the character of al-Husain ibn `Ali (A). This love and respect will have remained constant over the more than 13.5 centuries that have passed since that tragic occasion.

The significance of Muharram is evident in the Quran and Hadith, where Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala and His Messenger ﷺ reference the holy month.

When a fight is unlawful, Allah identifies the first four months to be honored which are Rajab, Muharram, Dhul Hijjah, and Dhul Qadah. Collectively, these four months are referred to as “Ashur E Hurum.”

In the Quran, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala states:

“Twelve months have been prescribed by Allahfour of which are holy in His records from the day He created the world and the sky. That is the appropriate course of action. Thus, be kind to one another over these months. And when they battle for you collectively, combat those who believe in God together. Recognize that Allah is on the side of the virtuous. [At-Taubah, Sura 9:36]
